The Cessna Citation Excel (560XL) is a midsize business jet that was designed to compete with the twin turboprop market. It was announced at the NBAA in October 1994, with prototype construction beginning in February of the following year and a first flight on 29 February, 1996. The first production unit rolled out in November 1997 and FAA certification was granted in April 1998. Deliveries began later that year.

The Excel has a shortened Citation X fuselage with an unswept supercritical wing and cruciform tail. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW-545A series turbofans, each delivering 3,804 lbf of thrust. The cabin features stand up headroom and a dropped aisle, and can seat up to 10 passengers.

Production switched to the Citation XLS in 2004. The XLS has upgraded PW545B engines and a glass cockpit.

A second upgrade, the XLS+, seats up to 12 passengers. It is powered by PW545C engines with FADEC controls, and has a revised nose design similar to that found on the Citation Sovereign and Citation X. Deliveries commenced in 2008.

Textron Aviation unveiled the Citation XLS Gen2 with interior modifications at NBAA-BACE in October 2021. First deliveries took place in early 2022.

The Citation Ascend was subsequently unveiled at EBACE in May 2023. The aircraft is expected to enter into service in 2025.
