In 2007, Switzerland-based Pilatus started work on a twin engine jet that would fly further and faster than its single turboprop PC-12, and that would still be capable of operating from short, unpaved airstrips; enter the PC-24.
The ‘Super Versatile Jet’ is a low-wing cantilever cabin monoplane, with room for eight passengers, that combines a medium-light jet cabin size, light jet performance and turboprop versatility. Cabin reconfiguration is simple, it has a pallet-sized cargo door for medical, utility and special mission transports, and the internal, pressurised baggage compartment measures 90 cubic ft.
The PC-24 was revealed at EBACE on 21 May, 2013 and it rolled off the production line on 1 August, 2014. The first flight of the prototype took place on 11 May, 2015 from Buocks airport, marking the start of a two year certification campaign. EASA and FAA type approval was received on 7 December, 2017 and the first customer delivery was on 7 February, 2018.
The Pilatus PC-24, certified for single pilot operation, is powered by two FADEC-controlled Williams FJ44-4A-QPM turbofans, each delivering 3,400 lbf of thrust and mounted in nacelles on the side of the rear fuselage. It doesn’t need an APU because the engines have Quiet Power Mode to provide ground power efficiently and quietly. It does have a T-tail and a retractable tricycle landing gear.
Towards the end of 2018, the PC-24 was certified to land on dry sand and gravel; Transport Canada certification was awarded on 27 June 2019; it has European and US steep approach certification; and, on February 2020, it was approved for rough field operation from grass, wet earth and snow-covered surfaces.
In February 2021, Pilatus delivered the first PC-24 with a high-utility 10 seat commuter configuration.
