The Gulfstream IV, introduced in 1985, is an improved, larger, longer range and advanced development of the earlier II and III.
Design work began on the 14 passenger intercontinental heavy jet in early 1983, with the first of four production prototypes making the type's first flight on 19 September, 1985. FAA certification was awarded on 22 April, 1987 and it entered service that year with serial number 1000.
The GIV was the first jet to use winglets as standard equipment and can be operated in and out of small airports. It is also the first business jet to have an entire glass cockpit.
Despite their higher thrust, its Stage 3 compliant Rolls-Royce Tay 611-8 turbofan engines brought significant fuel burn and noise emission improvements over the Spey engines of the II and III. It’s stretched fuselage boasted an aerodynamically and structurally improved wing, 30 per cent fewer parts, greater fuel capacity and range and an increased span tailplane.
The improved Gulfstream IV-SP replaced the IV from September 1992; special performance meant higher payload and landing weights and improved payload range performance. The first s/n was 1214, and at 1500 it was redesignated G400.
In June 1987, a GIV flew west over 36,800km around the world in 45hr 25min, setting 22 class world records. Another flew east in February 1988 setting 11 class world records. A IV-SP set new world speed and distance records on a routine business flight from Tokyo to Alberquerque in the US in March 1993.
Production ceased in 1992.
