Overview

Work on the Gulfstream G650 large business jet commenced in 2005. It taxied under its own power for the first time on 26 September, 2009 and made its maiden flight two months later.

On 7 September, 2012 the G650 received its type certificate from the FAA and the first delivery followed on 27 December, 2012. It can carry up to 18 passengers and is able to land at small airports.

The G650 uses two Rolls-Royce BR725 turbofan engines, each producing a maximum thrust of 17,000 pounds-force. The fuselage is of metal construction with metal bonding instead of riveting; composite materials are used for empennage, winglets, rear pressure bulkhead, engine cowlings, cabin floor structure and fairings.

An extended range version, the G650ER, was certified by the FAA in October 2014. The maximum take off weight had increased by 4,000 pounds, with an equivalent increase in fuel capacity. It is capable of flying 7,500 nm at Mach 0.85 and at Mach 0.90 can reach 400 nm beyond the baseline G650 to fly 6,400 nm. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines, has a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.925 and can carry up to 19 passengers. Customer deliveries commenced towards the end of 2014.

In May 2018 the G650ER achieved a city pair speed record during a flight over the North Pole. The 6,870 nm flight took 13 hours and 40 minutes between White Plains, New York and Shanghai, at an average speed of Mach 0.86. In 2019 a G650ER flew 8,379 nm from Singapore to Tucson, USA.

In May 2019 both the G650 and G650ER were certified for steep approach by the FAA.
