In the 1970s, with fuel prices at a high, Piaggio's turboprop-powered Avanti was designed to match light jet performance and cabin size. Engineering studies began in 1979 and the first prototype flew on 23 September, 1986. Italian certification was achieved on 7 March, 1990 and FAA certification on 2 October, 1990. The Avanti seats up to nine people in a pressurised cabin and may be flown by one or two pilots.
The fuselage, wings, tail and forward wing are metal. The forward wing serves as horizontal stabiliser and pitch control surface but has no elevator; that is on the tail.
There is a steeply raked windshield and two large ventral delta fins under the tail increase stability in flight. The engines are mounted in pusher configuration.
In November 2005, Piaggio obtained European and US certification for the The Avanti II, featuring uprated Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-66B turboprop engines.
The third generation Avanti EVO was launched in May 2014. It has winglets and Hartzell five blade, scimitar propellers behind the main wing’s trailing edge. Its wings are aerodynamically improved and an additional 400 lb fuel tank option increases range. Type certification was granted by EASA on 28 November, 2014, and by the FAA on 6 July, 2015. The first EVO was delivered in April 2015.
