The Challenger 604 intercontinental business jet can can accommodate up to nine passengers in business-class seats. It is a major upgrade of the 601 design, and a longer range derivative of the 601-3R, with a range of 4,077nm and a long range cruise speed of 787km/h.
The Challenger 604 prototype was modified on the production line from the 601-3R. It took its first fight with CF34-3A engines on 18 September, 1994, and a first flight with the more advanced CF34-3B engines on 17 March, 1995. It offers increased fuel capacity with saddle tanks to the rear, a new undercarriage for a higher take off and landing weight, it has a super-critical wing and structural improvements were made to the tail.
Transport Canada granted certification on 20 September, 1995 and the FAA on 2 November that same year. Deliveries began in 1995.
From June 2001, the aircraft have been delivered with upgraded PrecisionPlus Collins Pro Line 4 avionics.
Production ended in 2006, with a total of 365 jets built, the last delivered on 25 April, 2007.
