The South Australia and Northern Territory division of Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS SA/NT) has introduced the first aeromedical-configured Pilatus PC-12 PRO as part of a $60 million fleet modernisation programme.
Serial number 3010 arrived in Australia this week, becoming the first next-generation PC-12 PRO delivered worldwide in aeromedical configuration. The aircraft will support aeromedical retrieval operations across remote regions of South Australia and the Northern Territory.
RFDS SA/NT will receive five medically equipped PC-12 PRO aircraft from Switzerland throughout the year. The investment forms the organisation’s largest aircraft upgrade programme in more than a decade and was supported by funding from the Australian Government as well as contributions from corporate partners, donors, volunteer fundraisers and bequestors.
Tony Vaughan, chief executive of RFDS SA/NT, says: “This is a proud and historic moment for the RFDS SA/NT, those we serve and those who support us. The introduction of the PC-12 PRO affirms our commitment to innovation, safety and realisation of public value for communities and governments alike.”
Vaughan adds: “After extensive evaluation, RFDS SA/NT has again selected the PC-12 as its preferred aviation platform for the demanding performance requirements and social obligations of 24/7 aeromedical operations. The PC-12 has an outstanding safety record and a proven history of reliability operating in the diverse and challenging environments in which we deliver services, from the tropics in the Top End to southern Australia.”
Compared with earlier models, the PC-12 PRO introduces a lighter airframe, updated avionics and improved battery technology. The weight reduction enables greater patient capacity or additional fuel carriage, improving operational flexibility across long-distance missions.
The aircraft’s pressurised cabin can accommodate patients, medical crew and equipment, while a large cargo door and lift system enables rapid loading during medical retrieval missions.
Pilatus highlighted the aircraft’s role in supporting long-standing aeromedical operations in Australia.
“At Pilatus, we are extremely proud to support the RFDS with the introduction of the new PC-12 PRO into its fleet. This brand-new aircraft builds on the proven legacy of the PC-12, delivering enhanced performance, advanced avionics and increased capability to support the RFDS in achieving its mission of ‘furthest corner, finest care,’” says Dave Scutchings, CEO of Pilatus’ subsidiary in Australia.
The PC-12 PRO incorporates Garmin 3000 avionics alongside safety systems including safety autoland, autothrottle, smart glide and improved stall protection. The aircraft also retains the short- and rough-field performance of previous PC-12 models, requiring around 758 metres of runway and operating from grass, gravel and dirt airstrips.
