Viola takes over as president and CEO of GAMA
The former Vertical Aviation International leader has stepped into the role following Pete Bunce’s departure after nearly two decades at the helm.
Viola is a dual-rated flight instructor and ATP with more than 8,000 hours logged, including 1,100 using night-vision goggles.

James A. Viola has assumed the position of president and CEO of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, becoming the sixth individual to lead the association since its founding in 1970. Viola succeeds Pete Bunce, who had led GAMA since 2005.

Viola joins GAMA following four years as president and CEO of Vertical Aviation International, where he led the association’s rebrand from HAI and broadened its focus to encompass new technologies and expanding segments across vertical flight. He previously held senior roles at the FAA, including director of general aviation safety assurance, and served more than 20 years as a U.S. Army aviator.

“It is a privilege and an honour to be able to lead such an impactful global organisation that is known for the great work it does on behalf of the general aviation industry,” says Viola. “I look forward to working with our membership to continue to advocate for policies and regulations that allow for the industry to grow, flourish and advance innovation. While this is an exciting time for our industry there is still a lot of work to be done to meet new and ongoing challenges. It is important that we continue to illustrate the robust opportunities and economic and societal benefits that our industry provides around the world. Under my leadership, I plan for GAMA to provide valuable thought leadership and continue to be a commanding and astute voice for the good of its membership and the entire industry.”
