Leonardo's defensive system will protect VIP Airbus
This company's technology will safeguard a government customer's jet from missile threats, particularly those using infrared homing technology.
Read this story in our January/February 2025 printed issue.

Leonardo's platform protection system has been chosen to protect an Airbus A330 designated for VIP transport by a government customer. The system will be installed by Jet Aviation during completion of the aircraft at its MRO facility.

The company's Miysis Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) and Multi-Spectral Airborne IR (MAIR) combination enables the detection, tracking and defeat of multiple missile threats simultaneously. Miysis DIRCM has a 100% success rate against targets in live trials, ensuring protection against modern and legacy infrared missiles.

Miysis DIRCM requires no maintenance once installed, resulting in minimal through-life costs. There are no ITAR restrictions on the protection system, enhancing customers' control over its use.

MAIR is a 'distributed aperture' threat warning system that detects and tracks incoming missiles by fusing data from infrared cameras around the aircraft, using heat signatures. It dazzles the missile’s seeker head with a high-powered laser, preventing it from tracking the protected aircraft.

Compatible with all types of aircraft, Leonardo's protection system can be equipped to helicopters, wide-body aircraft and more. Its compact and lightweight design ensures that installation does not affect aircraft performance. Operating a common protection system also facilitates uniform training for operators and technicians, along with improved access to spares.
