Apollo MedFlight has achieved Level 3 safety management system status with guidance through the Wyvern Flight Leader programme, placing the organisation among a select group of air medical operators operating with predictive safety systems.
The designation reflects Apollo’s integrated safety culture, designed to anticipate and mitigate risk before it affects flight operations, delivering operational assurance for patients, hospitals and healthcare systems that depend on time-critical air medical transport.
Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Amarillo, Texas, Apollo MedFlight supports health system partners, EMS agencies and communities across North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Wisconsin. The operator flies a diverse fleet including the EC145, EC135, Bell 429, Bell 407 and King Air C90, while also maintaining experience on platforms such as the BK117 and PC-12NG.
Level 3 SMS represents one of the highest levels of safety maturity, marking a transition from reactive safety management to proactive and predictive risk mitigation. Apollo’s hazard identification systems detect potential issues before they impact flight operations, while integrated safety analytics across operational areas enable trend identification, protocol optimisation and reliable dispatch performance.
Miles Dunagan, vice president of safety at Apollo MedFlight, says: “Every second counts when lives are on the line; our clients need absolute confidence in their air medical partner. Achieving a Level 3 safety management system, earned in collaboration with Wyvern’s Flight Leader Program, provides our clients with that assurance. It means we don’t just react to safety concerns; we predict, prevent and continuously improve every aspect of our operations, ensuring that everyone goes home every time.”
The achievement validates Apollo’s predictive safety monitoring, targeted operational training and organisation-wide safety engagement. Unlike static compliance programmes, Level 3 SMS requires continuous evaluation and enhancement, ensuring the operator remains aligned with evolving industry safety expectations.
