The Tasmanian section of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), the Australian aeromedical operator, is entering into a new ten-year partnership with the Tasmanian government, ensuring the continued delivery of essential aeromedical retrieval services across the state.

Under the AUD 78.7 million agreement, RFDS Tasmania and South Eastern sections will maintain their role in providing fixed-wing aeromedical retrieval services, working closely with Ambulance Tasmania’s critical care and retrieval team to transport patients over long distances, both within Tasmania and interstate.

This long-term commitment guarantees Tasmanians access to world-class aeromedical care when they need it most. RFDS Tasmania has been serving the community since 1960, and this contract reinforces its mission to deliver excellence in aeromedical and primary health care services.

As part of the agreement, RFDS Tasmania will introduce a Beechcraft King Air B350 aircraft, offering: greater range and endurance for long-distance transfers; increased seating capacity for clinicians, ambulant patients and accompanying family members; enhanced comfort and efficiency for critical care transport.

Tasmanian clinical teams, including doctors, nurses and intensive care flight paramedics, have already begun medical transport specialist training on the new aircraft, with services scheduled to commence on 12 January 2026.

This contract comes alongside the planned redevelopment of the RFDS airbase at Launceston airport, jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian governments. Construction is expected to begin later this year, further strengthening RFDS’ capacity to deliver life-saving services.
