King Airs to gain 5G-tolerant altimeter tech
Air Dallas Instruments is partnering with FreeFlight Systems to provide King Air operators 5G-tolerant radar altimeters and the capability to upgrade older analogue altimeters.
With tailored high refresh rates, the Terrain series radar altimeters equip pilots with dependable tools for safe navigation amid increased airspace congestion and near cellular towers.

FreeFlight Systems and Air Dallas Instruments are collaborating on the installation of FreeFlight’s 5G-tolerant radar altimeters, specifically the RA-5500, on King Air aircraft, providing operators with enhanced safety and reliability.

“This collaboration enables us to provide King Air operators with 5G-tolerant radar altimeters and the capability to upgrade older analogue altimeters,” says Danny Barnfield, president of Air Dallas Instruments. “This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to advancing safety and performance in aviation technology.”

Since radar altimeters are responsible for 55 essential functions within aircraft avionics, the increasing concern regarding 5G interference is critical. Such signals can adversely affect pilots operating in various environments, not solely in proximity to urban areas or new cellular towers. FreeFlight’s Terrain series radar altimeters incorporate a cutting-edge digital processing system, ensuring accurate altitude readings that effectively mitigate the risks associated with 5G interference.

Shane LaPlante, vice president of sales and marketing at FreeFlight Systems, adds: “This collaboration underscores our commitment to enhancing safety and performance within the aviation industry. Our advanced radar altimeters represent a significant upgrade for King Air operators, providing peace of mind for safety and situational awareness.”

The Terrain series radar altimeters from FreeFlight are meticulously engineered to deliver exceptional accuracy and performance for any platform flying worldwide. With tailored high refresh rates, these altimeters ensure optimal operational effectiveness, equipping pilots with dependable tools for safe navigation amid increased airspace congestion and near cellular towers. The RA-5500 is distinguished as the only 5G-tolerant radar altimeter that provides operators with a comprehensive digital processing solution, serving as a self-contained retrofit for the direct replacement of legacy analogue altimeters.

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, the need for reliable altitude measurement solutions remains paramount. FreeFlight Systems and Air Dallas Instruments are dedicated to equipping King Air operators with the advanced technology required to navigate safely and effectively in today’s complex airspace.
