In 2010, Cessna began deliveries of an addition to the CJ family, the CJ4. It differs from previous CitationJet models in its moderately swept wing, similar to those on the Citation Sovereign. This, in combination with the two FJ44-4A engines, gives it speed and performance benefits while still being able to land on runways as short as 2,700 ft.
The cabin is 21 inches longer than that of the CJ3, allowing it to seat up to nine passengers, and a maximum of 10 with one seat alongside that of the pilot.
The CJ4 was announced at NBAA October 2006 when a cabin mock-up was unveiled, although marketing had begun the previous August and more than 70 aircraft were already on order.
The testbed CJ2 launched on 2 April, 2007 and a CJ2 prototype first flew at Wichita/McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas on 5 May 2008. There followed pre-series avionics testing and reliability trials from on 19 August that year. It made its public debut at NBAA October 2008 showing the production interior.
FAA certification was awarded on 12 March, 2010 in the Part 23 commuter category with the first delivery, a refurbished pre-series 0002 unit, arriving in Texas one month later. Number 0003 was retained by Cessna. The first production aircraft rolled out on 16 November, 2009 and first flew on 17 February the following year. The first delivery to Europe took place in October 2010. EASA certification followed on 18 May, 2011 and ANAC in August 2011. The first delivery of a charter-assigned unit was made to Germany on 1 July, 2011.
Just over ten years later, in February 2021, Cessna announced and began deliveries of its CJ4 Gen2. This model was redesigned to elevate ramp presence and in-flight comfort; with a lower, lighted stair and handrail, upgraded seating options and enhanced ambiance lighting throughout. Large jet features include electrically heated windscreens, single-point refuelling and an externally serviceable lavatory.
Using long range cruise power, the CJ4 Gen2 can go up to 2,140 nm, non-stop from LA to Atlanta, from San Diego to Orlando or from New York to Phoenix.
EASA certified the aircraft in June 2021 and the first delivery to Europe was made in May 2021.
