Aviation Performance Solutions (APS) has introduced an upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) programme designed specifically for pilots of Daher TBM aircraft. It launched alongside the 2026 TBM Owners and Pilots Association (TBMOPA) Annual Convention, held in Phoenix, Arizona, from 28 October to 1 November.
The TBM Family UPRT Program prepares pilots for unexpected aeroplane upsets in high-performance, single-engine turboprop operations, which are often flown in demanding single-pilot environments. It builds on APS’s existing UPRT methodology with TBM-relevant operating scenarios, aircraft performance considerations and practical upset prevention and recovery skills.
Paul ‘BJ’ Ransbury, CEO of APS, says: “TBM pilots operate exceptionally capable aircraft, and they deserve training that reflects the aircraft they fly.”
He adds: “This programme builds on their existing proficiency with the specialised skills needed to recognise, prevent and recover from unexpected upsets.”
Loss of control in-flight (LOC-I) remains aviation’s biggest fatal accident threat. The programme complements traditional initial and recurrent training by developing the recognition, decision-making and recovery skills needed when an aircraft departs from its intended flight path or operating condition.
At the convention, TBMOPA attendees could try immersive VR demonstrations of TBM-specific upset scenarios, which show how rapidly unexpected flight conditions can develop. They could also join VR ride-alongs to observe scenarios and pilot responses from an immersive perspective. APS representatives were at the event on 29 and 30 October to demonstrate the technology, introduce the programme and discuss training opportunities with TBM owners and pilots.
The TBM programme joins a series of recent aircraft-family UPRT courses from APS. The Pilatus Family UPRT Programme gives PC-12 and PC-24 pilots upset training tailored to the aircraft they fly and the environments in which they operate. It combines academics, all-attitude on-aircraft training, advanced simulation, jet UPRT and type-specific virtual reality. The Bombardier Family UPRT Program helps pilots integrate their competencies within the handling characteristics, automation environment, performance considerations and mission profiles of Learjet, Challenger and Global aircraft. The King Air Family UPRT Programme is aimed at the Beechcraft King Air’s military, ISR, air ambulance, public safety, corporate, cargo and regional roles. A Citation Jet UPRT programme covers wake turbulence upsets, low-altitude go-around stalls, skidded stalls and Mach and compressibility effects, with Founding Participant places on the simulator course offered from $4,795 per pilot.
