Boston MedFlight, a US nonprofit critical care transport organisation, has placed an order with Airbus Helicopters for the purchase of three H145 helicopters to support the continued modernisation and strategic growth of its air medical transport fleet serving New England. The order brings the total number of Airbus H145 helicopters purchased by the organisation over time to 12.
For more than 41 years, Boston MedFlight has provided lifesaving critical care transport services to more than 115,000 patients, with Airbus serving as a longtime partner in this mission. Today, Boston MedFlight operates an all-Airbus fleet of H145s. The addition of three twin-engine H145 helicopters over the coming years will support the replacement of existing aircraft while enabling incremental fleet growth, further strengthening Boston MedFlight's ability to transport critically ill and injured patients between regional healthcare facilities and directly from emergency scenes.
“These aircraft are essential to our mission, enabling our skilled pilots to safely transport patients while our medical crews focus on providing lifesaving critical care in transit,” says Maura Hughes, CEO of Boston MedFlight. “We've operated a variety of aircraft over the years, and the H145 continues to be the right fit for our mission today. It meets the demands of flying throughout New England, while offering the cabin space and flexibility to outfit the aircraft with the equipment we need to care for our patients.”
“Boston MedFlight performs vital, lifesaving missions every day, and Airbus is honoured to support its essential work,” adds Bart Reijnen, head of the North America region at Airbus Helicopters. “The five-bladed H145 delivers the ideal combination of cabin volume, smooth flight characteristics and Helionix safety technology that critical care crews need to operate safely and effectively in challenging environments.”
The latest version of the Airbus best-selling H145 light twin-engine helicopter features an innovative five-bladed bearingless rotor that increases useful load by 150 kg while simplifying maintenance routines and enhancing flight smoothness for patients and medical staff. Powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines with dual-channel full authority digital engine control (FADEC), the H145 is equipped with the Airbus Helionix digital avionics suite and a high-performance four-axis autopilot, increasing operational safety and reducing pilot workload.
Worldwide, more than 1,800 H145 family helicopters are in service, logging over 8.9 million flight hours across emergency medical services, public safety and civil missions. The three new rotorcraft will integrate into Boston MedFlight's existing aviation network, supporting around-the-clock emergency medical operations alongside the organisation's dedicated critical care ground vehicles.
Boston MedFlight has grown from a single helicopter operating out of Logan airport to five bases: Bedford, Lawrence, Mansfield and Plymouth in Massachusetts, plus a permanent base opened in March 2026 at Manchester-Boston Regional airport, its first outside Massachusetts.
Boston MedFlight's legal name is New England Life Flight; it operates under the Boston MedFlight trade name as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered at Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1985 by a consortium of Boston academic medical centres that continues to part-finance the organisation.
