The full-service FBO at Stephenville International Airport has resumed operations under new ownership and joined the Avfuel network, enhancing the services, fuel programmes and operational support available to operators in Canada's North Atlantic region.
Stephenville International Airport Corporation, supported by BTG Capital, acquired the airport in June 2026 following its closure. The reopening of the FBO marks an important step in reactivating the historic aviation site and establishing a premier technical stop and service destination for domestic and international operators.
Located in the St. George's Bay area of Newfoundland and Labrador, Stephenville International was originally constructed in 1941 by the United States Army Air Force and is one of Atlantic Canada's most unique aviation assets. Its 10,000-ft runway can accommodate a wide range of aircraft, including large commercial and cargo aircraft, positioning Stephenville as an ideal international tech stop.
“Stephenville is a unique facility, and Avfuel is thrilled to welcome its FBO to our branded network as it resumes service,” says Jonathan Boyle, Avfuel's vice president of sales for contract fuel and bulk fuel. “Its strategic location and infrastructure create tremendous potential for aviation growth, and we look forward to supporting the team as it re-establishes Stephenville as an important destination for operators in the region and around the world.”
The FBO operates from the airport's full-service, 20,000 sq ft terminal, which features well-appointed pilot and passenger lounges, a conference room with full A/V capabilities and seating for 10, additional meeting-room availability, complimentary refreshments and a flight-planning space. Its dedicated team provides 24/7 ground handling, Customs support (available in the fourth quarter of 2026) and personalised concierge support.
“We are incredibly excited to resume FBO operations at Stephenville International and strengthen aviation services across Canada's North Atlantic region,” notes Andrew Gibbons, representative of the airport owners. “There is immense opportunity to establish Stephenville as a premier aviation gateway, and our partnership with Avfuel gives us access to the programmes, resources and support needed to deliver the high-quality experience pilots, operators and passengers expect.”
By joining the Avfuel network, the Stephenville FBO unlocks a range of benefits for its customers, including the AVTRIP rewards programme and competitive Avfuel Contract Fuel pricing. Customers also benefit from transaction ease when using the Avfuel Pro Card on site, with the ability to place fuel and non-fuel items, with or without a fuel purchase, on a single transaction while avoiding processing fees.
In addition, the FBO leverages the Avfuel Training System to support its staff with comprehensive fuel-safety and operational training, helping ensure consistent, high-quality service for visiting aircraft and crews.
