Intelligent Ownership by Erin Air is a game-changer
By placing an owner's aircraft into a qualified charter programme, Intelligent Ownership uses charter revenue to offset the fixed and variable costs of ownership, from crew and maintenance to insurance and hangarage.
Erin Air is well-versed in light jets.

As it marks more than 45 years of flying, Erin Air, a privately owned charter and aircraft management company based at Seattle Boeing Field in Washington state, has launched Intelligent Ownership, a new approach to private aircraft ownership designed to make owning a jet dramatically less expensive and entirely hands-off. By placing an owner's aircraft into a qualified charter programme, Intelligent Ownership uses charter revenue to offset the fixed and variable costs of ownership, from crew and maintenance to insurance and hangarage, while the owner retains full control and guaranteed access to the aircraft.

Erin Air says the structure can reduce annual operating expenses by more than 60 per cent and unlock tax offsets of 70 per cent or more, depending on utilisation, while its charter-management structure exempts qualifying aircraft from Washington state's 10 per cent luxury tax. Because the aircraft is based at Boeing Field, minutes from Seattle's business and technology core, owners have seen charter utilisation rise by more than 100 per cent, and they benefit from preferred fleet-level fuel pricing, on-site maintenance by Erin Air's own technicians and access to the company's private terminal. Erin Air handles every operational detail, crew staffing and training, maintenance, insurance, compliance, scheduling, catering and charter marketing, with direct access to leadership and transparent monthly reporting.

Intelligent Ownership also extends to a share-ownership option, in which shareholders hold a titled interest in a specific aircraft and are added to Erin Air's FAA Part 135 certificate without transferring equity to the company. Shareholders receive the same benefits as a full owner, guaranteed access with two weeks' notice, charter-revenue participation, transparent monthly financials and reciprocal access across the Erin Air managed fleet at preferred rates.

The programme formalises a model Erin Air has run since it moved to Boeing Field in 2000 and began managing owners' aircraft. Founder and chairman Michael J. Malone traces it to the company's earliest days, when he began chartering out his own King Air and later sold a jet to a friend on the condition that Erin Air continue to manage it, provide crew, insurance and maintenance, and charter it when the owner was not flying. That arrangement has since grown into a managed fleet of Cessna Citations and Gulfstream aircraft.

“Intelligent Ownership lets our clients own a jet entirely on their terms: real transparency, a materially lower cost of ownership and a team that has managed aircraft this way for more than four decades. It is ownership without the headaches, and the numbers speak for themselves,” says Del Castillo, vice president of sales and marketing at Erin Air.

Alongside Intelligent Ownership, Erin Air offers the EA Jet Key programme, a jet card alternative built for active private flyers. Keyholders fly on demand at fixed hourly rates, secured by a simple refundable deposit that never expires. There are no membership fees, no monthly dues, no booking fees, no blackout dates and no peak-day surcharges, and if a member ever decides the programme is not for them, the deposit is returned.

Members fly on Erin Air's privately owned fleet that includes the midsize Cessna Citation XLS and Citation Excel and the super-midsize Citation X with consistent pilot crews, a dedicated charter representative, priority booking, a cancellation policy built for real life and complimentary catering, high-speed wi-fi and automobile detailing. Because the programme is backed by Erin Air, an FAA Part 135 direct air carrier rather than a broker, the pilots, the maintenance team and the people who answer the phone all work for the same company that operates the flight.

“We designed EA Jet Key to be the next best thing to owning your own jet: your aircraft, your crew, your schedule, without the capital. No fees, no blackout dates, and your deposit back if it is not for you,” adds Castillo.

Earlier this year, Erin Air also opened a new private terminal at Seattle's Boeing Field, the only private terminal operated by a charter company at the airport. The facility gives owners, charter clients and their guests a discreet, fully personalised arrival and departure experience just minutes from downtown Seattle. It offers roughly 12,000 sq ft of hangar space with 25-ft ceiling clearance, alongside a luxurious private lounge with two seating areas, a phone room and a private conference room.

The lounge provides high-speed wi-fi, a flat screen TV, premium beverages and curated snacks, while the conference room is equipped with an HDMI-connected display and whiteboard for meetings and video calls before a flight. Guests reach their aircraft by driving through Erin Air's private, client-only gate, with the aircraft positioned directly in line with the gate for a smooth, secure boarding, and may park their vehicles inside the secured hangar. The facility also offers short- and long-term hangarage and overnight parking, with owners benefiting from discounted fuel, hangar, servicing and maintenance rates.

“We built the terminal so our clients experience true privacy from the curb to the cabin, with the same team looking after them on the ground as in the air, just minutes from downtown Seattle,” explains Castillo.

Erin Air manages and charters aircraft under both FAR Part 135 and Part 91, providing a complete platform for owners: aircraft management, on-demand charter, maintenance oversight and regulatory compliance. Operating across both certificates lets the company tailor each arrangement to the owner's mission, whether the aircraft is flown privately, offered for charter or a combination of the two.

The company was founded by chairman Michael J. Malone, who bought a King Air A90 around 1979, realised he could not use it to its fullest and began letting others fly privately by charter. An early chief pilot, Alan Turnidge, helped turn the venture into an enterprise and the company officially took off on 14 August 1980 as the first private charter operator in the Pacific Northwest, starting with three employees, a single King Air A90 and its first business client, Seattle department store The Bon Marché.

By 1990 the company had upgraded to a King Air A200 and logged 10,000 flight hours along the West Coast. In 2000 it added a Cessna Citation II and moved to Boeing Field, where it developed the aircraft management programme that would underpin its long-term growth. Through the 2010s it surpassed 50,000 flight hours, expanded the fleet with a Citation VII, two Citation XLs, a Citation X and a Citation Bravo, and brought maintenance in-house, allowing it to fly farther, including to Hawaii, Central and South America. Erin Air now operates a fleet led by the Cessna Citation XLS, Citation Excel and Citation X, and maintains a 100 per cent safety record. Today it stands as the oldest private jet charter company on Boeing Field and within the Puget Sound.

Over Erin Air's more than 45 years of existence, the business aviation industry has seen waves of acquisition, consolidation and private-equity ownership, with many long-standing operators absorbed into national brands. Erin Air has taken a different path, remaining locally rooted and privately owned, a continuity of ownership and service that the company sees as central to the trust its clients place in it. The business points to the launch of its Intelligent Ownership programme and EA Jet Key membership and the opening of its private terminal as evidence that an independent operator can keep investing and innovating without outside ownership.
