Europe’s business aviation market continues to show resilience. According to WingX data, activity increased by 3.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. Yet operators are navigating an increasingly complex operating environment.
Fuel pressure on European business aviation
The conflict in the Middle East has added another layer of uncertainty around fuel supply and pricing. With anti-tankering regulations already limiting the amount of fuel aircraft can carry on board, having an intelligent fuel strategy is becoming vital.
ReFuelEU Aviation, which sits within this broader regulatory framework, represents a significant milestone in the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the industry’s transition towards net zero. However, alongside these opportunities come new compliance pressures. Operators are now required to closely monitor, track and report fuel-related data.
Managing new fuel reporting requirements
Meeting these obligations presents a practical challenge for many operators. Aircraft management companies, for example, often run lean teams, with the same individuals responsible for flight operations, compliance and documentation.
As requirements become more extensive, digital tools are becoming essential not only for managing environmental reporting but also for supporting the wider range of regulatory frameworks operators must navigate.
Harnessing digital to manage compliance
This extends beyond fuel management. Operators need strong control over manuals, policies, procedures and operational records. Few organisations still rely solely on generic word-processing tools or paper-based processes, as these make it difficult to verify that personnel are using the latest version of a manual, that changes have been properly approvedops or that the correct records are readily available when requested by regulators.
Digital documentation platforms and electronic flight bags (EFBs) help address these challenges by bringing all information into one place. Creating a single source of truth helps businesses maintain audit trails while ensuring teams are working from approved, up-to-date documents.
For organisations operating across multiple European jurisdictions and managing multilingual documentation, technology also plays a critical role in improving efficiency and saving time manually translating information.
The AI shift in aviation compliance
This shift towards digitalisation has been underway for some time. More recently, attention has turned to how AI can help organisations manage the growing volume of operational and compliance information they handle.
For compliance teams managing safety, technical, regulatory and operational manuals, AI tools are beginning to change how users interact with documentation. For example, natural-language search allows users to ask questions and receive citation-backed answers drawn directly from their manuals. This can speed up decision-making in time-sensitive situations and make regulatory information easier to access across the organisation.
Generative AI can also support the authoring process itself, helping compliance teams rephrase content, generate clear summaries and format technical information more effectively. This ensures manuals are not only accurate and quick to create, but also easier to understand and apply in day-to-day operations.
EASA’s digital framework
While EASA does not mandate the use of specific software products, aviation organisations are increasingly expected to manage safety, records and security in a more structured and demonstrable way.
Part-IS is EASA’s information security framework. Developed in recognition of the digital infrastructure the industry now depends on, it highlights a renewed focus on information security as an integral part of aviation safety.
Under Part IS, operators must identify, protect, monitor and manage information security risks. Despite adding another layer of compliance, organisations that invest in secure and well-governed digital systems will be better placed to meet future requirements without losing operational agility.
Minimising security risks
It’s worth noting that digitalisation and AI do not come without risk. Recent IT outages and air traffic control disruptions have exposed the vulnerabilities associated with an increasingly connected operating environment and the need for strong security measures.
Business aviation companies can minimise this risk by scrutinising their digital partners more closely, including whether their providers meet recognised information security standards. SOC 2 status, for example, was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to assess how service providers manage and protect client data.
Matching demand with digitalisation
Technology is now embedded across the European business aviation market. It plays a central role in helping operators manage safety and compliance, and with the emergence of AI and increasingly stringent security requirements, is critical to navigating a more complex regulatory and operating environment.
As we enter the summer travel season, with charter and aircraft management companies facing increased demand, having a robust and efficient document management system is becoming essential to improving efficiency and keeping operations running as planned.
