Horizon Airways has introduced Australia’s first Tecnam P2012 STOL aircraft as part of its regional operations across the Torres Strait and northern Queensland.
The aircraft will support services into remote island communities including Mabuiag, Darnley and the Murray Islands, where short runways and demanding operating conditions require specialist aircraft capability.
Horizon Airways says the P2012 STOL will replace ageing aircraft currently operating on the routes and provide passengers with improved comfort, modern safety systems and twin-engine reliability.
Ed Morrison, CEO of Horizon Airways, says: “With the purchase of the Tecnam P2012 STOL, the future of regional air travel across the Torres Strait and Cape communities has begun. This first-of-its-kind aircraft in Australia has been purpose-built to meet the unique demands of our region and deliver a level of capability unlike anything currently operating in the market.”
Morrison adds: “Operating from Horn Island, the Tecnam P2012 STOL will allow us to provide safer, more reliable access throughout the Torres Strait and Northern Cape communities, while offering modern comfort for passengers travelling across some of Australia’s most remote locations.”
The nine-seat aircraft features an air-conditioned cabin and has been designed for short take-off and landing operations on some of Australia’s shortest commercial airstrips.
Founded in 1994, Horizon Airways provides charter operations, pilot training and regional aviation support services across Queensland.
