Western Australia’s emergency response capability has been bolstered by the introduction of three Leonardo AW139 helicopters into the RAC Rescue service.
The AUS $26.7 million investment has been funded by the WA Government, managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and sponsored by RAC. Operated by CHC Helicopter, the helicopters feature advanced search and rescue technology and aeromedical equipment, with the speed and range to reach more people in need across the state.
Able to fly at 309 km/h and travel 300 km further than the Bell 412EPs they replace, the AW139s offer more cabin capacity, enabling stretchered patients, seated passengers or humanitarian cargo to be carried depending on mission needs. The RAC Rescue helicopters operate from Jandakot and Bunbury, with a third aircraft available for backup and forward deployment.
CHC Australia head Cameron Dixon says: “These new AW139 helicopters are already changing lives. They give our crews the speed, range and capability to reach people faster and deliver life-saving care exactly where and when it's needed.”
Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia adds: “In an emergency every second counts, and these new helicopters can fly faster and further, helping our emergency services to save lives across our vast state.”
Since starting in 2003, the service has flown more than 10,500 missions and over 2.25 million kilometres across WA.
