ZeroAvia has reached consensus with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on a signed P-1 Special Conditions Issue Paper for certifying its 600kW electric propulsion system (EPS).
The P-1 follows the FAA G-1 paper issued in February 2025 and outlines the special conditions governing certification of ZeroAvia’s propulsion technology. When the FAA publishes the rule in the Federal Register, the next stage will define the means of compliance for the EPS.
Progressing from the G-1 to the P-1 also supports the company’s wider effort to certify its first hydrogen-electric powertrain with the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
The 600kW EPS uses proprietary inverter and motor technology. It incorporates four 200kW inverters converting DC to AC to drive a direct motor running at 2,200 rpm. Applications could include fixed-wing aircraft, rotorcraft and UAVs.
ZeroAvia has already tested its ZA600 hydrogen-electric engine, which combines the EPS with a hydrogen fuel cell system, on a Dornier 228. It is also working with Textron Aviation to secure a supplemental type certificate for the Cessna Grand Caravan, while RVL Aviation has committed to using the ZA600 on a UK hydrogen-electric commercial route.
Val Miftakhov, founder and CEO of ZeroAvia, says: “Getting this electric propulsion system certified and into service will be a monumental leap in the next great transition in aviation: from fossil fuel combustion to electric aviation.”
