Garmin targets Q3 for GDM 4500 and 450R DME radios
Both models support DME-DME RNAV and Free Scan, with compatibility for Garmin and third-party avionics depending on configuration.
The GDM 4500 supports ARINC 429 and integrates with certain third-party systems.

Garmin has introduced two new remote-mount DME radios, the GDM 4500 and GDM 450R, both of which are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2025. Each unit supports DME-DME Area Navigation and Free Scan capabilities. Both products can track two separate DME frequencies at once, while compatible Garmin avionics can scan up to three more.

The GDM 450R is aimed at Part 23 general aviation aircraft and integrates with Garmin flight decks and TXi displays. It includes DME hold, legacy interface support and optional multi-frequency scanning.

The GDM 4500 has enhanced environmental durability and higher qualification levels for turbine aircraft and helicopters. It supports Garmin and select third-party systems via ARINC 429. DME-DME navigation and Free Scan are standard with compatible FMS.

“Given the increased interest among aircraft owners for alternative navigation sources, we are excited to now offer a ground-based DME solution. While DME technology has been available for decades, these new Garmin solutions will help modernise the capabilities on many aircraft, and we look forward to seeing pilots leverage these features around the world,” says Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president, aviation sales, marketing, programmes and support.
