Work has commenced on Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance’s new airbase on George Curl Way, near Southampton Airport. The project signals the charity’s shift from its current base in Thruxton, Andover, to a more centralised location within its region.
The charity says the relocation will significantly reduce patient response times, allowing crews to reach nearly every call-out within ten minutes of take-off. The £1.7 million raised so far leaves £1.9 million still required to meet the total cost.
Rosewood Construction Services has been appointed to lead the nine-month conversion of the existing building. The Southampton-based contractor has longstanding experience with complex builds at the airport and will deliver a 4,273 square metre, two-storey site housing a helicopter hangar, helipad, training rooms, offices, accommodation and a garage for ground vehicles.
The facility will also include a visitor centre overlooking the helipad to support the charity’s CPR and AED training for the local community.
“Every step we take towards our goal of moving into our new home is hugely significant, not just for our service but for the thousands of lives that will be impacted each year,” says Richard Corbett, CEO at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. “A huge thank you to everyone whose kindness and generosity have turned this long-held dream for the charity into a reality.”
Lewis Bowers, director at Rosewood Construction Services, adds: “We are truly honoured and privileged to have been chosen to deliver this project for such an incredible charity. As a long-time contributor, and having a personal connection through a family member who has directly benefited from their services, this project holds deep personal meaning for us. We are fully committed to exceeding expectations and delivering something truly exceptional.”
