Garmin expands Data Comm access through retrofit
The company has enabled FAA Data Comm functionality for over 25 aircraft types by expanding support to GTN 750Xi navigators with GDR 66 datalink radios.
Pilots can request route shortcuts, heading changes and more directly via their GTN 750Xi navigators.

Garmin has extended its FAA Data Comm solution beyond integrated flight decks, bringing it to the retrofit market with compatibility across more than 25 makes and models. The system is now available via the GTN 750Xi series navigators when integrated with the GDR 66 VHF datalink (VDL) Mode 2 transceiver. When paired with Garmin’s TXi flight displays, pilots benefit from enhanced push-to-load capabilities and synced cockpit displays in two-crew aircraft.

Data Comm allows properly equipped aircraft to receive and load departure clearances, frequencies and more directly into avionics, reducing workload and minimising the risk of read-back errors. Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president of aviation sales, marketing, programmes and support, says: “With thousands of GTN 750Xi navigators installed, many more aircraft owners will now be able to easily upgrade their aircraft to receive the Data Comm capability.”

The CPDLC-DCL function is supported at over 60 airports for streamlined departures, and enroute Data Comm is available above 16,000 feet MSL throughout the US. Pilots can also make requests such as altitude or routing changes directly from their avionics systems. Garmin offers Data Comm subscriptions for ongoing service.
