Hynett moves to non-exec role after two decades at Britten-Norman
William Hynett has stepped down as the company's CEO to focus on strategy after steering the Islander maker through investment and repatriation milestones.
Hynett was credited with leading the reshoring of Islander aircraft production from Romania back to the UK.

Britten-Norman’s long-serving CEO William Hynett OBE is stepping aside from day-to-day responsibilities after more than 20 years in post. He will continue with the business as a non-executive director on the board, where his attention will shift to business strategy.

The transition comes as the manufacturer enters a new chapter of investment and development, following a period of significant transformation under Hynett’s leadership. He played a central role in repatriating Islander production from Romania back to the UK, strengthening the company’s sovereign manufacturing footprint and reinforcing its aerospace relevance.

Chair Alison Rankin Frost says: “William has been the driving force behind Britten-Norman’s continuing resilience and growth. His deep knowledge of the business and commitment to UK sovereign manufacturing have shaped the company into what it is today. We are delighted that he will continue to provide strategic oversight and guidance as a non-executive director on the board.”

During his tenure, Hynett oversaw major investment in infrastructure, manufacturing and customer support. He also led efforts to expand Britten-Norman’s global customer base and supported the long-term development of special mission aircraft.

Reflecting on the move, Hynett says: “It has been an honour to serve Britten-Norman over the past two decades. This business has always been more than just a company to me; it's a part of my family's legacy. It was my late father, Maurice Hynett, who first encouraged me to get involved, and I've carried that sense of personal commitment with me ever since. I am incredibly proud of what the team has achieved in safeguarding our heritage, supporting our customers and investing in our future. With new capital backing and an exciting strategic roadmap, now is the right time to hand over day-to-day leadership. I look forward to supporting Britten-Norman and its next chapter from the board.”

Britten-Norman recently secured fresh investment to boost manufacturing capacity at its Solent and Isle of Wight sites. Hynett’s contribution to the sector has been recognised with an OBE for services to aviation and dedication to British industry.
