FAA sets certification path for Ampaire hybrid system
G-1 approval now defines the airworthiness and environmental criteria that the AMP-H570 must satisfy for certification.
The AMP-H570 does not require ground-based charging infrastructure thanks to its in-flight hybrid recharging system.

Ampaire has received FAA approval of the G-1 Issue Paper for its AMP-H570 hybrid-electric propulsion system, setting the standards the system must meet for supplemental type certification. This clears the way for the next certification phase: agreeing the Means of Compliance and continuing the test campaign.

The AMP-H570 uses an in-flight recharging hybrid system, removing the need for ground charging infrastructure. Its retrofit-friendly design offers operators faster deployment and reduced upfront costs.

The system is intended to reduce fuel burn, maintenance costs and emissions while extending aircraft service life. Ampaire claims its Eco Caravan testbed aircraft has already shown double the fuel efficiency of conventional aircraft and recently ran successfully on 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuel.

The US Air Force has backed research into applying the AMP-H570 to the King Air. Aircraft OEMs are also examining both parallel and series hybrid configurations of the system for future aircraft types.

Ampaire cofounder and CEO Kevin Noertker says: “The FAA's issuance of the G-1 certification basis for the AMP-H570 is a major step forward in commercialising hybrid electric propulsion. This milestone demonstrates that we are executing on our regulatory roadmap, removing risk for investors and customers and accelerating real-world deployment.”

Chief technology officer Ed Lovelace adds: “Ampaire has worked for many years in close collaboration with our counterparts at the FAA. This productive dynamic has been instrumental in ensuring the highest safety standards while supporting the commercialisation of our impactful, innovative solutions. The FAA's engagement has been essential to making hybrid electric propulsion a viable, scalable option for the aviation industry.”

Work is now under way on the G-2 Issue Paper, which will confirm the Means of Compliance. Certification of both the AMP-H570 and Eco Caravan is targeted for the end of 2026.
