FAA gives green light to MT-Propeller's M500 engine upgrade
The conversion swaps the PT6A-42A for the lighter PT6A-135A and delivers quieter, more efficient performance across the Piper M500 range.

MT-Propeller’s engine and propeller upgrade for the Piper M500 Meridian has gained FAA certification, adding to the EASA approval granted earlier. The modification replaces the aircraft’s original Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A engine with a PT6A-135A and includes a five-bladed MTV-27 propeller, reducing noise and improving fuel efficiency.

The switch to the lighter engine moves the aircraft into the small-size turbine category, aligning its cost per mile with piston-powered counterparts such as the PA46-350P Mirage while enabling cruise speeds up to 260 kts at 30,000 feet. Maximum range figures under ISA conditions vary between 960 and 1,340 nautical miles depending on cruise speed and altitude.

MT-Propeller says the retrofit is particularly attractive for ageing M500 Meridians with high engine hours or those approaching overhaul, offering operators a cost-effective upgrade path that boosts residual value. The company adds that the lighter PT6A-135A allows for better payload-range performance and that the STC is available through select dealers across North America and Europe.

External noise levels are cut significantly, from 74.9 to 66.9 dB(A), while the cabin environment also benefits from a lower propeller speed of 1,900 rpm. The upgrade kit includes all necessary installation components, although a Garmin EIS remains a minimum requirement and is not supplied as part of the package.
