Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with Archer Aviation to bring eVTOL aircraft to Africa using the Midnight air taxi. The deal makes Ethiopian the second customer in Archer’s Launch Edition programme.
A signing ceremony took place in Addis Ababa, formalising the partnership. The two companies will now work together with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority to safely deploy the aircraft. Archer will provide pilots, technicians and engineers for the initial rollout.
Ethiopian Airlines group CEO Mesfin Tasew says: “We are committed to pioneering advanced air mobility solutions that enhance connectivity and drive sustainable aviation in Africa. Our partnership with Archer Aviation marks an important step in bringing cutting-edge eVTOL technology to Ethiopia.”
The announcement follows Archer’s initial Launch Edition agreement with Abu Dhabi Aviation, which plans to begin Midnight operations this year and serve as a model for other early adopter regions.
The Midnight is a piloted eVTOL aircraft designed for 10–20 minute flights, offering a quieter and more sustainable alternative to 60–90 minute car commutes. It accommodates four passengers and is optimised for rapid back-to-back trips with minimal charging time between flights.
