Air Link and AirMed use SAF in emissions trial
The Australian operators aim to reduce carbon output by testing a sustainable fuel blend on charter and aeromedical flights.
The initiative supports Australia’s net-zero aviation targets through fuel and aircraft innovation.

Air Link and AirMed, part of Aviation Logistics Group, have begun Australia’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) trial in general aviation. Conducted in partnership with Viva Energy, the trial uses a blend of 9% synthetic component from waste and residue feedstocks and 91% Jet A-1 fuel in the operators’ fleet.

Mark Wardrop, CEO and chief pilot at Air Link, says: "We're thrilled to be part of this first ever Australian general aviation sustainable fuel trial, and we are keen to see how this particular blend performs. Air Link and AirMed are committed to reducing emissions and playing our part in meeting the Commonwealth Government's net-zero targets. This trial is a great opportunity to demonstrate how we can make a real difference in aviation sustainability."

Viva Energy's carbon solutions manager, Rob Cavicchiolo, adds: "Viva Energy is proud to be supporting this general aviation SAF trial through the supply of a synthetic blending component blended with Jet A-1. Viva Energy is committed to playing an important role through the future supply of sustainable aviation fuel to assist in reducing carbon emissions from the aviation sector. This partnership highlights how collaboration between suppliers and operators can drive positive change for the future of aviation and its decarbonisation journey.”

The trial reflects Aviation Logistics’ ongoing efforts to adopt sustainable aviation practices. The company is also investing in zero-emission aircraft, having secured orders for 20 Vertiia electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from AMSL Aero. The Vertiia, designed for a 1,000 km range and speeds of 300 km/h, is intended for regional operations including passenger services, aircraft charter, air freight and aeromedical flights. Commercial operations for the aircraft are targeted for 2027.
