Bristow signs Nova for Coast Guard mission systems
Delivery of mission systems for Bristow’s Irish SAR contract will ensure accelerated capability, improvements and longevity of vital lifesaving SAR aviation services.

Bristow Ireland has awarded a contract to engineering services and technology solutions company Nova Systems for the integration of mission systems into six AW189 helicopters that support search and rescue missions on behalf of the Irish Coast Guard. Nova Systems will use its EASA approved Part 21 design organisation in Shannon.

Bristow Ireland was selected by the Irish Department of Transport to deliver SAR aviation services, including helicopters and fixed wing, on behalf of the Irish Coast Guard and will begin transitioning to the new contract in the fourth quarter of 2024. It will operate the helicopters from dedicated bases in Sligo, Waterford and Dublin Weston, as well as alongside two specialised King Airs providing operational SAR support and environmental monitoring from Shannon airport. The fixed wing aircraft will also be available to provide ‘top cover’ support to helicopters engaged in long range medical evacuations.

This comes as Nova Systems continues to expand its special mission aircraft solutions offering, spanning the Atlantic and delivering support solutions for 26 rotary wing aircraft.

Managing director international Gareth Dyer says: “The Irish SAR contract builds on the mission systems work we’re already doing in support of Bristow for the second generation UK Search and Rescue Aviation programme and the Dutch Caribbean Coastguard.

“Our team includes experienced mission systems operators that have flown extensively in the airborne parapublic environment and are an integral part of our design and testing process. We have a proven record of working closely with clients to deliver bespoke solutions tailored to meet their exacting requirements through the application of cutting-edge technology and the experience of our operators. We look forward to delivering on this contract and supporting the vital work of the Irish search and rescue teams.”
