German rotary operators win follow-up contract for flying clinic
A new contract follows a successful pilot phase that proved it was possible for flying doctors to treat affected patients 90 minutes faster on average. The second phase of the project will start in January.
The Flying Intervention Team performs time-critical interventions from one of ADAC's more than 50 helicopters.

As part of the Flying Intervention Team project, Germany-based helicopter emergency medical services not-for-profit ADAC Luftrettung and rotary service provider Helicopter Travel Munich (HTM) have been recommissioned by the Munich Clinic - Harlaching to carry out helicopter flights under HEMS status.

Under the terms of the contract, the clinic's TEMPiS telemedical stroke network intervention team will be flown to partner clinics as quickly as possible in order to carry out mechanical clot removal (thrombectomy). The follow-up contract follows a successful pilot phase that proved it was possible for flying doctors to treat affected patients 90 minutes faster on average. The second phase of the project will start on 1 January, 2023.

The Flying Intervention Team consists of a neuroradiologist and an angiography assistant and specialises in performing thrombectomies in stroke patients. In the event of an alarm, the TEMPiS intervention team is immediately flown by helicopter to the requesting clinic where it will carry out the medical examination and treatment. Since such treatments are extremely time-critical, ADAC Luftrettung, alternating with HTM, has a helicopter and crew ready 14 hours a day, seven days a week in the immediate vicinity of the Munich clinic. This important medical aid can now be provided 365 days a year in phase two of the project.

"We are pleased to be able to continue to contribute to this medical lighthouse project together with our partner HTM. We will also fully contribute our expertise and experience in phase two of the project,” says ADAC managing director Frédéric Bruder.
