Italian Coast Guard furthers Leonardo commitment with another pair of AW139s

The Italian Coast Guard has placed an order for an additional two AW139 intermediate helicopters, a move that will increase the operator’s AW139 fleet to 12. The rotorcraft will be used to perform missions including maritime patrol, SAR and emergency medical services. The latest order includes options for a further two units.

The coast guard chose the AW139 following a European tender launched in August 2014 for a second batch acquisition. Delivery of the first batch commenced in 2010 and since entering service the type has performed operations around Italy’s coastline and maritime economic exclusive zone.

Featuring an external rescue hoist, cargo hook, wire strike protection system, search/weather radar, marine band and satellite communication systems, life rafts and HD FLIR, the aircraft is designed to offer plenty of space for crew, equipment and passengers. AW139s are currently in service with the Italian State Police, Guardia di Finanza customs and border protection and the Italian Air Force. This order brings the total number of AW139s chosen by Italian government departments to 41.
