Pre-owned Aircraft Market Analysis: Justin Jones of John Hopkinson & Associates says...
John Hopkinson & Associates Ltd is Canada's oldest and largest aircraft brokerage company, having been in business for over 40 years.
Read this story in our December 2014 printed issue.

John Hopkinson & Associates Ltd is Canada's oldest and largest aircraft brokerage company, having been in business for over 40 years. We have facilitated the purchase and sale of over 4,000 new and pre-owned aircraft during that time.

It seems that a lot of types, in both the jet and turboprop segment, are starting to show genuine signs of market stability for the first time since 2008. As part of this, we have seen the business jet inventory contract slightly in the past few quarters.

Our company has been heavily involved with Citation Ultras in the past few years, and we have noticed that this market has remained quite stable, both in terms of pricing and availability, with roughly 12 per cent of the fleet available.

We have found that the Ultra has been either a great entry level aircraft for clients or an upgrade from a turboprop. The ideal combination of speed, range, load and short field capabilities, plus the cabin size has proven to be a perfect performer.

Similarly, Citation models such as the Encore and Excel are stabilising and showing slight increases in prices.

Looking at other models in the smaller jet category, the Phenom 100 market is quite tight with only six per cent of the fleet available and pricing remaining stable. The Beechcraft Premier 1 has continued its slump in value, though the Premier 1A seems to be having a slight upswing.

Unfortunately, aircraft with older technology look unlikely to recover. This is mostly due to the fact that the cost to upgrade these aircraft is becoming prohibitive.
