Damian Roberts, chief pilot of LNT Aviation in Leeds, gave a new meaning to fly-drive in a busy week that tested all his Twin Squirrel's versatility. The team he flies to and from motorsport races has pulled off an historic win in the Le Mans 24 hours. Sheffield based motorsport outfit Team LNT steered their Panoz Esperante GTLM to victory in the GT2 class. The team competed for the first time in the Panoz at Le Mans, and left such established marques as Porsche and Ferrari trailing in their wake to take the chequered flag. Roberts says: "The majority of my flying is connected with the race team. The speed and versatility of the Twin Squirrel F1 was essential as there was a really busy itinerary. I flew drivers and personnel down to the race track but the main task was ferrying drivers between chateau and track throughout the week." However he adds: "While the helicopter tasks were very achievable in the Twin Squirrel I am enjoying bringing a new Eurocopter AS365 into service." The AS365 was delivered to replace the Twin Squirrel. Yorkshire driving duo Lawrence Tomlinson from Harrogate and Leeds based Richard Dean, shared the driving duties with 21-year-old Sportscar newcomer Tom Kimber-Smith from Henley. Driver and Team LNT owner Lawrence Tomlinson said: "It's been a rollercoaster for us. You couldn't have written the script! We were five laps down from the leading Porsche at one stage." The LNT team is in its first season - and has only competed in six races so far. American Don Panoz, owner of the Panoz marque, said: "This is a day I will never forget and a week to be always remembered. To be awarded the Spirit of Le Mans and winning in the same week is more than could ever be dreamed of." Team LNT is winning the British GT Series and is among the leaders of the LMES Series.
