Jeppesen ForeFlight is showcasing ForeFlight SMS, a safety management system built natively into the ForeFlight platform to help small and mid-size business aviation operators establish and manage a structured safety programme without adding another software system to their operation.
For many operators, safety management still relies on a combination of spreadsheets, email, paper forms and shared drives. This can make it difficult to maintain a single source of truth, consistently assess risk, track corrective actions and demonstrate compliance.
ForeFlight SMS brings these workflows together in the platform operators already use for flight planning and operations. The solution provides structured tools for hazard reporting, risk assessment, corrective and preventive action management, internal audits and safety performance visibility.
“ForeFlight SMS was built to give small and mid-size operators an easier way to manage safety without adding complexity,” says Tim Schuetze, chief product and technology officer, Jeppesen ForeFlight. “By connecting safety workflows with the operational data already captured in ForeFlight, operators can spend less time managing disconnected systems and more time managing risk.”
Key capabilities include: multi-channel safety reporting – ability to submit hazards, incidents, near misses and accidents through the web, ForeFlight Mobile or QR code, including anonymous reporting; risk assessment – evaluate baseline and residual risk using an ICAO-based risk matrix, with risk acceptance and ALARP workflows; centralised risk management – maintaining a single risk register and track hazards through resolution; CAPA management – assign, track and verify corrective and preventive actions with scheduled effectiveness checks; internal audits – plan and conduct audits using customisable checklists within ForeFlight; connected FRAT workflows – ForeFlight FRAT is included with the SMS subscription, allowing pre-flight risk assessment data to flow into the same safety ecosystem; and safety visibility – basic dashboards provide visibility into top hazards, open corrective actions and overall safety status. ForeFlight FRAT, the pre-flight risk assessment tool bundled with the new SMS subscription, is not new: it shipped as part of ForeFlight 18.5 in June 2026, four months before the SMS product was showcased at NBAA-BACE.
With ForeFlight SMS, operators can replace disconnected spreadsheets, email chains and paper forms with a single, auditable system while keeping safety management within the tools their teams already use.
ForeFlight SMS is designed initially for small and mid-size business aviation operators, particularly lean Part 91 operations where safety responsibilities are often distributed across multiple roles.
The FAA published a final rule on 26 April 2024 extending mandatory SMS requirements under 14 CFR Part 5, which had previously applied only to Part 121 air carriers, to every Part 135 certificate holder and commercial air tour operators under FAR 91.147.
Jeppesen ForeFlight is also releasing FliteDeck Pro version 5.3, introducing Enroute Profile View and a set of targeted improvements designed to help commercial flight crews make better decisions, reduce workload and maintain situational awareness throughout every phase of flight. This announcement reinforces the company's commitment to delivering a unified, best-in-class experience across its integrated product family.
FliteDeck Pro 5.3, carrying the Enroute Profile View, began releasing on 26 August 2026.
For operators subscribed to Enroute Intelligence, FliteDeck Pro 5.3 delivers a leap forward in vertical situational awareness with the introduction of Enroute Profile View. The new capability gives crews a cross-section perspective of terrain and weather along the active route, allowing them to see exactly what lies ahead vertically and make more informed calls on routing and step climbs before they become an issue, without leaving their primary flight operations platform.
The feature mirrors Profile View functionality long available to ForeFlight Mobile users, extending a proven capability to the commercial aviation market and continuing the trajectory set by the Graphical NOTAMs introduction in the previous version.
“Enroute Profile View is another example of how the depth of the ForeFlight platform can be expanded to benefit our commercial aviation customers,” shares Martin Kemp, vice president of commercial flight deck, Jeppesen ForeFlight. “Functionality that crews have relied on in ForeFlight Mobile for years is now available in FliteDeck Pro, and that's a direct result of what we're able to do as a combined product family.”
