Vertical Aerospace has completed its third and final full-scale prototype aircraft, which is due to begin piloted flight testing following commissioning in January 2026.
The final prototype will double flight test capacity and support public demonstrations later in 2026. It incorporates systems and technology from partners Honeywell, Molicel and Syensqo. After initial testing in an all-electric configuration, the aircraft will be retrofitted for hybrid-electric testing later in 2026.
The existing Valo prototype has completed 10 piloted flights since receiving its Permit to Fly from the UK Civil Aviation Authority on 13 November 2025. These have expanded most of the transition envelope, including acceleration and deceleration through various speeds and tilt positions.
Only 10% of tilt transition remains, with full transition expected in early 2026. Vertical has completed first-time milestones including in-flight deployment and stow of the rear propellers, spin-up during wingborne flight and prop-hold functionality.
Flight tests are being conducted under full CAA oversight. Vertical has recently been granted additional authority to approve Flight Conditions and issue its own Permits to Fly under certain conditions.
Stuart Simpson, CEO at Vertical Aerospace, says: “As we look ahead to 2026, the addition of our final prototype marks an important step in closing out our prototype flight test programme and maintaining momentum towards commercialisation. Our test pilots are eager to get this aircraft into the air.”
He adds: “Our team continues to make excellent progress as we close in on full piloted transition flight. Achieving this level of performance under CAA oversight is a major validation of our engineering approach and a critical milestone as we move toward certification.”
Vertical previously unveiled Valo as its next-generation certification aircraft, which is scheduled to enter commercial service in 2028. Seven certification aircraft will be built in the UK to support final testing with both the CAA and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
The company will begin a US tour with Valo in January 2026, starting in New York City.
