CAE adopts CBTA principles to modernise pilot training
Pilots on EASA recurrent programmes will experience scenario-based assessments and behavioural feedback under CAE’s CBTA-aligned framework from 2026.
CAE’s CBTA model offers personalised feedback and clearer performance metrics for each pilot.

CAE has adopted competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) principles across its business aviation programmes, marking a shift away from traditional task-based instruction towards scenario-led training that focuses on measurable pilot performance.

CBTA has been endorsed by global regulators including the FAA, EASA, UK CAA and Transport Canada. The approach blends standardised procedures with decision-making skills and continuous feedback, aiming to improve real-world preparedness. CAE will begin offering CBTA as an optional element of the EASA recurrent training programme from January 2026, starting with Phase A.

“Instructors will assess and develop pilot skills using CBTA methodology,” says Alexandre Prévost, president, civil aviation. “Our advanced training solutions are designed to help pilots and operators thrive in an ever-changing aviation landscape.”

The company’s Continuously Optimized Recurrent (CORe) model structures training around modular, data-driven content. Instructor development began a year ago to embed CBTA principles in CAE’s delivery. The company says the method enhances safety by targeting both technical and non-technical competencies, including decision-making and situational awareness.
