Phoenix airports reach Level 3 carbon status for first time
The City of Phoenix Aviation Department’s Deer Valley and Goodyear airports were recognised for verified emissions data, clean transport expansion and renewable energy planning.
Both airports are reducing emissions through energy audits, LED upgrades, electric vehicles and plans for on-site solar power.

Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (DVT) and Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR) in Arizona have for the first time achieved Level 3 status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme for the 2024 reporting year.

The accreditation recognised each airport for collecting and verifying emissions data, developing long-term carbon management plans under the City of Phoenix Aviation Department’s Roadmap to Net Zero Carbon and collaborating with stakeholders including fixed-base operators and tenants.

“Achieving Level 3 accreditation for our general aviation airports, Deer Valley and Goodyear, marks a significant step in the department’s commitment to sustainability across our entire airport system,” says City of Phoenix Aviation director Chad Makovsky.

Both airports completed energy audits to identify conservation opportunities and applied measurable initiatives such as installing LED lighting and high-efficiency motors, switching to electric vehicles and charging systems, expanding renewable energy sources, and advancing plans for on-site solar arrays that generate clean power while providing shaded parking.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, also operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department, renewed its Level 4 certification for 2024 and has held this accreditation since 2021, making Phoenix one of the few U.S. cities with multiple airports recognised for carbon management. All three were honoured for their achievements at the ACI Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition in Toronto.
