Terminal upgrade at Springfield Branson gains architectural award
Springfield Branson’s general aviation terminal redevelopment has been awarded a regional architectural honour after upgrades delivered more space, efficiency and passenger amenities.
The 2024 redevelopment delivered expanded pilot facilities, larger restrooms and a new community room for Springfield travellers.

Midwest Premier, the sole FBO at Springfield Branson National Airport in Missouri, has been recognised as an award-winning facility after the airport received the 2025 General Aviation Project of the Year – Architectural Award from the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives. The award highlighted the design and construction quality of the Midwest Premier restoration project, completed in October 2024.

The general aviation terminal had supported private and corporate air travel in the Ozarks since 1990. As the Springfield metro area grew, so too did the need for expanded facilities.

“We weren't looking for good; we wanted SGF to be great for our corporate and private passengers,” says Dave Schaumburg, assistant director of aviation and project manager. “With the help of Dake Wells Architecture and Nabholz Corporation, Midwest Premier accomplished that goal.”

The airport adopted a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) model for the project, collaborating closely with the design team to deliver practical upgrades alongside high-end amenities. A recommended material change by the CMAR saved $1.1 million while maintaining visual impact.

“Dake Wells certainly shares the airport's excitement for this award for General Aviation Project of the Year,” adds Brandon White, BIM manager at Dake Wells Architecture. “We were honoured to be selected by SGF to help bring the vision of a reimagined FBO to life; one that introduces air travellers to the community and region where we live, work and that we love. This award recognises the partnerships that made it happen.”
