magniX and Robinson Helicopter Company have agreed to collaborate on a battery-electric demonstrator based on the Robinson R66 platform. The project targets a first flight by late 2026, with magniX contributing its integrated electric powertrain, including its HeliStorm engine range and high energy density Samson batteries. These components are designed specifically for rotorcraft applications.
Reed Macdonald, magniX CEO, says: “We are excited to be working with Robinson to lead the transformation of the helicopter industry by creating the next generation of vertical lift propulsion systems.”
He adds that magniX has previously flown two electric Robinson helicopters and looks forward to deploying its new engine and battery systems. In 2022, the company powered the first electric flight of a retrofitted Robinson R44, followed in March this year with the first piloted hydrogen-electric helicopter flight. The R66 platform, with over 1,500 units in service, will be the focus for the next stage of development.
Robinson president and CEO David Smith adds: “magniX’s proven experience in electric propulsion and previous experience with the R44 make it the right partner to collaborate on alternative powerplant solutions.”
