Regional airports show strong support for electric flight, says study
A report from the BERTL project found most airports ready to integrate electric aviation, with many planning infrastructure updates within five years.
75% of participating airports believe they can support electric aircraft within the next five years.

The BERTL project (Battery Wing for Regional Electric Transport Aircraft), led by Vaeridion alongside Bauhaus Luftfahrt and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has published a report revealing strong support among regional airports for adopting electric aircraft.

Vaeridion, which is developing the short-haul electric Microliner aircraft, played a major role in conducting airport interviews to ensure the report reflected operational realities.

All participating airports expressed interest in electric aviation and 75% believed they could integrate it within five years. Many saw it as a chance to become sustainability leaders by investing in smart grids, renewable energy and battery storage.

The study was supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Interessengemeinschaft der regionalen Flugplätze (IDRF), which helped connect the project to airports. Bauhaus Luftfahrt contributed research on scalability and integration.

“Electric regional air mobility has the potential to reconnect underserved regions while drastically reducing emissions,” said Vaeridion founder and CEO, Ivor van Dartel. “This report shows that airports large and small are not just open to the idea; they are actively looking for ways to make it work.”

The collaboration between airports, researchers and innovators signals growing momentum behind clean regional air travel.
