AIM addresses skills shortage with campus move
A move to a larger and well-equipped campus means AIM can help to address the need for close to 800,000 airframe and powerplant technicians in coming years. The Norfolk premises also house an FAA testing centre
AIM's move provides an opportunity to grow its student population and offers improved training amenities.

Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM) Chesapeake has relocated its flagship campus to a new facility in Norfolk, Virginia. This follows the company's recent acquisition of Teterboro School of Aeronautics in the New York City metro area, its 13th campus nationwide.

According to the 2019 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook, the aviation industry will need to hire over 769,000 aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) over the next 20 years. With the increase of its student body and the growing need for AMTs, the move provides the school expansion and modernisation opportunities.

The new campus is housed in an 11 acre, 109,000 sq ft facility. The building has two separate hangars, one for aircraft and the other for powerplants. It also includes a separate engine room along with specific areas for welding, soldering and composites. The school's equipment includes multi engine and single engine aircraft, airframes, turbine and piston engines, a helicopter and specially designed training aids.

“Our new campus is our largest aviation maintenance campus around the country with two aircraft hangars, a glass-enclosed engine room and a gym and basketball court to enhance student life,” says VP of operations Dr Joel English. “We are thrilled to launch our flagship campus in Norfolk on prominent E Little Creek Rd.”

AIM Norfolk's new campus offers the convenience of an on site certified testing center where students can take their FAA written examinations. All classrooms are equipped with smart TV technology and wi-fi is available for students. A fully equipped computer lab and learning resource centre are available along with separate lounge areas, including a special area for the veteran population. The school also has a 13,000 sq ft gymnasium with a full-sized basketball court for student activities and community events. The facility is less than two miles from Norfolk International airport.
