Finmeccanica's AW109 Trekker has completed its maiden flight. A prototype aircraft took off at the helicopter division's Cascina Costa facility in Italy and performed without incident.

The flight included an assessment of the aircraft's general handling and basic systems. Two prototypes will be used for the programme development as it progresses towards EASA certification, which is slated for the end of this year. The Trekker was designed as a solution for utility, public services and aerial work operations, and is designed to have high produc- tivity, excellent flying qualities, high controllability and good manoeuvrability.

First unveiled in February 2014, the helicopter is the latest addition to Finmeccanica's stable of light twins and is the first such aircraft to offer skid landing gear. It has a maximum take off weight of 3,175 kg and a speed of 168 kts, and is equipped with a glass cockpit and integrated avionics. The cabin can accommodate up to six passengers, one stretcher with three medical attendants or two stretchers and two medical attendants.

Firm orders for over 20 units have been logged so far by customers in Europe, North America and Asia, to perform roles such as emergency medical service and utility missions.
