The new Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, UK, is on course for opening with its terminal building weeks away from completion and its first flights scheduled to leave on April 28.\rIt is on the site of the former RAF Finningley air base. Peel Holdings purchased the site in 1999 to turn it into a commercial airport to serve 2.3 million passengers and 62,000 tonnes of freight. According to the company, the airport has the capacity to handle charter, scheduled, long-haul, freight, general and business aviation internationally. Situated within Yorkshire, passengers have quick access to Sheffield, Leeds and surrounding areas as well as Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.\rThe runway, which was resurfaced in 1989, is just under two miles long and has been in use since the start of this year to assist with air traffic control procedures and licensing. A series of ‘proving’ flights will soon be taking place.
