The first Atlantic crossing with Centurion 1.7 jet fuel piston aircraft engines has been achieved.
A twin-engine Diamond DA42 Twin Star covered the 4,700 nautical miles, reportedly without any problems. It took off from Vienna Neustadt (Austria) on July 20, heading for EAA AirVenture Convention in Oshkosh (USA).
It reached London, Ontario (Canada) in a flight time of under 28 hours. The average speed for the flight was 161 knots, and jet fuel consumption was 42 litres per hour.
Pilot Gerard Guillaumaud said: “This aircraft is a joy to fly over such long distances. The flight was very comfortable and quiet.”
The route of the flight led via Scotland, Iceland and Greenland to North America. The Twin Star made outstanding progress on the last non-stop section from Kuujjuaq (Quebec, Canada) to London, covering over 1,100 nautical miles in a time of seven hours and 45 minutes despite a strong headwind.
The total consumption for the Atlantic crossing was 312 gallons of jet fuel. The maximum height reached was 20,000 feet.
