A Jersey-based client has bought the first modified Piper Meridian from UK, Ireland and Spain Piper distributor Meridian Aviation. The new Meridian has an increase of 15 per cent in useful load capacity. The gross weight capacity has been increased from 4,850 pounds to 5,092 pounds. The Meridian Gross Weight Project concentrated on two areas – aerodynamics and structural changes. The aerodynamic modifications, designed to increase the lifting capability of the aircraft, consisted of adding vortex generators to the wings and the underside of its horizontal stabiliser and making modifications to stall strips.
Sales director Bob Berry said the enhancements may were small but will make a big difference to Meridian buyers. “Useful load is a very important factor to owners and the 15 per cent increase will dramatically enhance the usefulness of the aircraft,” he said. “The stall speed has also been reduced.”
Piper has also changed the Meridian’s auto pilot, moving from Avidyne to the KMD850 multi-functional display with moving map.
