Barcelona Airport may soon be opening a brand new GA terminal, courtesy of Euraservices. The company expects completion by 2004, although there is still an element of uncertainty hanging over the expansion plans.
Operations director Fernando Zarza said: “Here in Barcelona the airport is growing so much that any space is reserved for regular and charter flights. We’ve got in contact with the authorities regarding this new project, but we’re still waiting for 100% approval.”
If the project is approved, business aviation passengers can expect state-of-the-art facilities, larger lounges for crew and passengers and possibly a new hangar. “The hangar is subject to airport availability, but it would help us cope with the recent increase in traffic. Post September 11 traffic numbers fell, but over last year there has been an improvement,” said Zarza.
More recently Euraservices has experienced more than its fair share of celebrities passing through
its facilities.
“Around one month ago the MTV awards took place in Barcelona, so there were a number of flights coming through.
“We handled a variety of stars who attended, including Enrique Inglesias, Eminem and Kylie Minogue. Plus
a Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place in Barcelona around once a year, so we handle drivers and spectators alike,” he added.
While Euraservices is looking forward to expanding its capabilities, Zarza pointed to a more imminent threat to industry stability.
“The majority of our customers are vips and company ceos, and these people are very worried
about the possibility of war in the Middle East. If the war does start then I believe that GA will really suffer,” he said.
