Sheffield Aviation has launched services from Sheffield City Airport. The company will offer private charter services, aircraft hire, aerial photography and twin engine pilot training. Sheffield Aviation is an offshoot of Skytrain of Gamston, “After August 18, British Airways is stopping scheduled flights from Sheffield. The airport is telling us that it’s looking more at GA rather than airline traffic,” said company flying instructor, Maurice Housley.
The airport will no longer offer any scheduled services once British Airways halts its last service and it will leave Sheffield Aviation as the only aviation company at the airport. “At the moment there is no competition based here and nobody as yet is planning to set up. We think that Sheffield is ten years ahead of its time as a city airport, and I can see in ten years every city wanting one.
“It’s brand new, with buildings custom-made and it’s right next to the city. But the airport is still
very much in its infancy, as far as people being aware that they can fly from an airport this close to the city,” said Housley.
The company said it chose the name Sheffield Aviation to associate itself as closely as possible with Sheffield Airport. “We have a close relationship with the airport and at the moment our aircraft is the only one based here. We have a PA 23 trainer and will shortly be adding a Cessna 340,” he said.
