Representatives from the UK’s business and general aviation aerodromes have delivered a message to MPs and peers about what they perceive to be the vital role of their sector within UK air transport.
At a meeting in the House of Lords organised by the Airport Operators Association (AOA), aerodrome managers called for business and general aviation to form an integral part of the Government's aviation White Paper expected later this year.
It is estimated that as many as two thirds of current airline pilots have been trained at general aviation aerodromes and, with air travel set to continue growing, the AOA says this will be an important source of new pilots.
Keith Jowett, chief executive of the AOA, said: “A vibrant general aviation sector is vital to air transport in the UK – it is a source of much-needed pilots, the provider of essential emergency services and the supplier of a valuable service to UK business.
“The Government is currently shaping an aviation policy for the next 30 years - the services provided by general/business aviation must form an integral part of that policy.”
