Business aviation cramped in little Luxembourg
With a population of only 380,000, it is not surprising that Luxembourg's air charter industry is less than extensive. There is currently no dedicated GA terminal at the duchy's single airport, although plans are said to be in consideration to change this state of affairs, and business aircraft have no choice but to share facilities with airline traffic.

With a population of only 380,000, it is not surprising that Luxembourg's air charter industry is less than extensive. There is currently no dedicated GA terminal at the duchy's single airport, although plans are said to be in consideration to change this state of affairs, and business aircraft have no choice but to share facilities with airline traffic.\rDucair SA says it is one of only two charter companies at present in Luxembourg. The company purchased a Learjet 35A in December, to add to its King Air 200 and two MD 900 helicopters. EBAN spoke to René Closter, chairman and ceo of Ducair, about the acquisition.\r"It's fast, reliable and suitable for multiple uses. We fly a lot of ambulance flights in it, and it has big cargo doors. It is configured for vip charter in an eight-seat formation, and as an air ambulance with room for two stretchers," Closter said. "We recently added the King Air as well, and with our two MD 900s, it is a nice completion of our fleet." \rThe Learjet 35A has flown more than 200 hours since the beginning of 2000, Closter reports, with destinations including Europe, Egypt and Morocco. "You name it, we have been there," he said. As well as executive charter missions, Ducair operates all the air ambulance missions for Luxembourg Air Rescue, and is the AOC holder for Luxair Executive. \rThere is very little scope for business aviation in Luxembourg; it is such a small country. If you were to come here by car and your brakes failed, fine, you would just pass through and you wouldn't see it," laughed Closter. \r"I created Ducair 12 years ago as a foundation for Luxembourg Air Rescue. Our biggest target is to deliver really high quality service, and I mean really high quality. I have a bank manager background and I am focusing on quality to the customers. I guess that is why we have so much success. We were the launching partner for McDonnel Douglas with the new 900 helicopter, and we have the finest medically equipped helicopters in Europe," said Closter stridently.\r"There is only one airport here in Luxembourg, with no business aviation part. We have to use the bigger facilities on the airport, and this doesn't work very well. We have had news that a GAT will be built, which will support business aviation," Closter reported. "No date has been set. Unfortunately, we are not in charge of this project, the Luxembourg government is to build it." Watch this space.
